Plan to train – train to the plan!
Does this sound like you…
When you’re planning to go out for a ride, you lay out your clothing, prep your food and plan your route. You block out a slot for your ride and arrange the rest of your day around your time on the bike. Whichever event/race/challenge you want to do is planned into your diary. You’ve already booked your holiday from work, booked your accommodation, even booked the bike in for a service to make sure it’s running like a dream.
After investing ALL this time in your plan, what are you actually doing when you are physically training? Do you put the same amount of effort into planning it? Are you making sure that your training is consistent, progressive, and specific for the event/ race/challenge that you have planned to do?
The long game
One of the main barriers to the success of the self-coached athlete is a lack of long-term planning. The reality is that self-coached athletes only plan maybe 2, 3 or 4 weeks at a time. Focusing on what they know that has worked in the past, often piling more volume and intensity into each workout.
Because training time is limited and every second counts and to get fitter, it has to be harder, right? Otherwise, the blue fitness line on Training Peaks stops going up.
I’ll give you 3 months of hammering away at this or completing the 8-12 week generic plan you purchased because it promised results. You’ll reach peak volume, because you are time crunched (you physically cannot fit any more hours in). And you physically cannot go any harder (because you are tired or nursing an injury) and that blue line plateaus'.
You’ll bumble along for the next couple of months and turn up on the start line tired, just wanting to get it done. Because you spent all that time planning your life around one big bike ride.
Now there’s a glimmer of hope that events and races will go ahead around August and September time. This means that now is the time to start putting the planning into motion.
You have the perfect amount of time of 6 months to progressively build your training and peak at the right time. This is where we can help you out.
